EXCLUSIVE: Fashion Stars Pose With Their Musical Muses For W
The theme of W‘s July issue is music and style, and while we loved the mag’s feature on Beyoncé, our favorite spread involves 10 designers and their stylish musical muses.
Edward Enninful On Being Black In The Fashion Industry
Edward Enninful is one of a scant handful black people who have made it big in the business of fashion magazines. Accordingly, he’s one of the few people who can talk authoritatively about what it’s really like. In a recent interview he explains that while there are plenty of talented black models, editors and designers working their way up through the ranks, it’s going to take a lot of education (and a dose of honesty) in order for more of them to succeed.
Can You Guess Who This Is?
There’s nothing magazines love to do more than dress up a modern day beauty as an old school icon, though it’s almost invariably Marilyn Monroe. For W’s June issue, photographer Tim Walker styled one of Hollywood’s most beautiful faces as everyone from Buster Keaton to Marlene Dietrich to Elvis — with nary a Monroe-esque pout to be seen. How refreshing!
W Goes Old School, Taps Julia Roberts & Tom Hanks For June Cover
Okay, maybe old school isn’t quite the right turn of phrase, but Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks on a magazine cover reminds us of the ’90s in the BEST WAY. Anyway! They’re starring in a new movie together, and consequently also gracing the cover of W.
Edward Enninful To Replace Alex White At W Magazine
In what might be the most drama-free magazine staff change in recent weeks, W‘s creative fashion director Alexandra White stepped down yesterday, to be replaced this morning by Vogue‘s longtime contributing stylist Edward Enninful. Enninful will take the title fashion and style director. And White (and her former boss Stefano Tonchi) couldn’t be happier.
Obviously Karl Lagerfeld Doesn’t Wash His Own Hair
If you had 30 minutes with Karl Lagerfeld, what would you ask him? W asked him lots of things, and the answers certainly do not disappoint — not that we would expect anything less than chic absurdity from the Kaiser. Allow us to present seven Karlisms that will make your day.
PHOTO: Mia Wasikowska Is W Mag’s April Cover Star
W magazine’s April cover is here and in keeping with the pattern set by Stefano Tonchi‘s new reign, it features a celebrity. Except in this case, the celebrity is indie-verging-on-breakout-starlet Mia Wasikowska and her face is almost entirely obscured by a white Gaga-esque mask.
WATCH: Mila Kunis Covers W, Mocks Baywatch
We’ve had a bit of a girl crush on Mila Kunis ever since we discovered she of whiny Jackie on That ’70s Show fame was also the voice of The Family Guy’s Meg Griffin. (We also love how steadfastly she dated Macaulay Culkin. It was so endearing. Anyway!) And now Kunis, though already undeniably famous, has shot to superstar status with her turn in everyone’s favorite crazy ballerina movie, The Black Swan. But Kunis, to her credit, seems to still be remarkably down to earth: the best part of her W profile and accompanying video screen test is when she mocks Baywatch (she’s a two-time guest star).
Women Start To Lose Their Looks At Exactly 35.09 Years Old
When do ladies start to age? We mean, really age. According to Japanese scientists, it’s all downhill after women reach the ripe old age of 35.09 (or about a month after your 35th birthday). We were alerted to this fact via Sloane Crosley‘s latest piece for W, and being lovers of all things Japanese and all things Sloane (seriously, have you read her stuff?), we had to see what this was all about.
Kim Kardashian Upset About Naked Photos, W Mag Responds
On Sunday night’s episode of Kourtney And Kim Take New York, the Kardashians’ most famous sibling broke down in tears over the visibility of her nipples in that now infamous W magazine cover and spread for which she posed, well, naked.
PHOTOS: A Look Back At Our Most Popular Posts Of 2010
Despite being less than one year old, we’ve written and published over 3,200 stories in 2010 — an accomplishment due in no small part to our debatably healthy obsession with the topic at hand, our indefatigable interns, our ingenious contributors, and, most importantly, the support of our readers. Which is why, instead of picking our ten favorite posts of the year, we picked your favorite posts of the year. The numbers don’t lie — and these ones reveal some very interesting things.
PHOTOS: The 15 Best Magazine Covers Of 2010
In a year when the best advice anyone could give about anything was “Do the best you can with less,” fashion magazines — the smart ones, anyway — seemed to respond in kind. White space, nudity, and faces (and bodies) rather than full-on fashion dominated the best magazine covers of 2010, and we’ve assembled a group of 15 books we think did it best.
PHOTOS: Interview, i-D, Love And More Get The Vogue Treatment
Last week, we showed you what a year’s worth of Vogue magazines would look like if you layered them on top of one another. Now, you can see what Interview, i-D, Love, V, and W would look like if you did the same. And just so you know, the answer is: very, very cool.
Willow Smith Writes Thank You Notes, Has Candy Cane Hair
We reported on Willow Smith‘s appearance in W mag last month, but we were recently alerted to the cutest part of the whole thing: Willow’s adorable handwritten thank you note to senior fashion editor Carolyn Tate Angel. Oh, and we also like her candy cane hair.
W Picks Up Vanity Fair‘s Trashed Rooney Mara Cover
We always wondered how magazines within the same publishing houses avoided putting the same celeb on the same cover in the same month. And we found out this morning that at Conde Nast, it’s Graydon Carter‘s way or the highway.
Willow Smith Featured In W’s December Issue
The fashion establishment is starting to take notice of one Miss Willow Smith, and we couldn’t be happier! The youngest Smith makes her glossy fashion magazine debut in December’s issue of W magazine, which will hereafter be known as the most awesome issue Stefano Tonchi has rolled out to date.
Which Gossip Girl Character Will Be Interning For W?
W may have lost its creative director, but Stefano Tonchi is making sure the magazine keeps a high profile. In addition to all the nakedness, the mag is now making the leap to television — specifically, to Gossip Girl.
A Very Pregnant Miranda Kerr Posed Naked For W
While initially preoccupied with couples and kissing, Stefano Tonchi seems to have developed a thing for the nude. Last month a very naked Kim Kardashian appeared on W‘s cover, while a just as naked but much more pregnant Miranda Kerr makes an appearance in December’s issue.
Which Celeb Cover Resulted In A Huge Sales Boost?
For fashion magazines, a single September issue can make or break the year. The Audit Board of Circulation’s Rapid Report, which counts the number of single-copy sales of each magazine, lets us know just how well the glossies fared. And you might be surprised at which celebrity gave their magazine a serious newsstand sales boost.
Tonchi’s W Loses First Staffer, Creative Director Jody Quon
Stefano Tonchi‘s recently revamped W magazine has just dropped its third issue, and already one newly hired staffer is departing. Jody Quon, who was only hired as W’s creative director in April, has resigned under some very interesting circumstances.
